Posted by peahix on 7th January 2009

Just passing on this “review” of the Radioaktivox from long-time French Optigan user Thierry Bellia: I’d like to say that you did an incredible job with the Radioaktivox record!!! The sound is just amazing, you did something incredible!!! The basses are great, and the samples are just in the spirit of Optigan. It’s a pity [...]

New Optigan Diagnostic Test Disc Samples

Posted by peahix on 1st November 2008

Hi all- Robert had a couple of Optigan diagnostic test discs made: These discs have various test tones, sweeps, etc on them, as well as some sound files taken directly from the “Rock & Rhythm” master tapes. They are identical except that one is at 8000dpi and the other is at 4000dpi. The 4000dpi discs [...]

New Optigan Disc Survey

Posted by peahix on 14th October 2008

We now have the ability to create new discs for the Optigan, Orchestron and Talentmaker from scratch, using any sounds we (or you) like. We intend to offer these new discs to the public, but the production costs are quite high, which necessitates our need to obtain a more accurate understanding of what you, the [...]

Posted by peahix on 9th October 2008

Over the years, I’ve had lots of folks propose various schemes for making new Optigan discs using computer software. Finally, someone has come through with a workable system! Robert Becker is the engineering wizard that made this technological advance possible! And what kind of sounds do I give him to make the first test disc [...]

Unfortunately, somebody already took the “optigan” domain on wordpress, so… blogtigan it is! Probably what I’ll do first is add all the items from the optigan.com “tidbits” page here. These are [...]

How do I clean my Optigan discs?

Posted by peahix on 23rd April 2006

It’s largely a futile effort, because the scratchiness is mostly caused by actual scratches on the discs, but if you really want to clean them, DON’T use water! Go out and buy some film cleaning fluid from a camera store. Keep in mind even a mint Optigan disc sounds pretty bad right out of the [...]

Will Talentmaker Discs play in an Optigan and vice-versa?

Posted by peahix on 23rd April 2006

Again, yes and no. The center hole diameter is slightly different between the two types of discs. It’s a very small difference, but one that results in more crosstalk when you try to play a disc on the other machine. Also, the Talentmaker discs contained a total of 61 rings of soundtrack, versus the Optigan’s [...]

Will Orchestron Discs play in an Optigan and vice-versa?

Posted by peahix on 23rd April 2006

Yes and no. First of all, the Orchestron was not an “organ” and thus did not have an chord buttons- only a 37 note keyboard. Second, the actual track layout of the Orchestron discs differs from the that of Optigan discs. With the Orchestron, Mike devised a track layout which was much more forgiving of [...]
